Farmland Preservation
Harrison County joined with two adjacent counties, Carroll and Jefferson, for the purpose of developing a Farmland Preservation plan for the region. The results of this effort identify several recommendations for preserving farmland and the agricultural way of life in the area. Those recommendations include an enhanced focus on agriculture as economic development, comprehensive planning, local land trusts, acquisition of development rights for farmland, rural zoning, and rural/urban partnerships for planning.
Other recommendations are made for action at the state and national levels. These include tax relief designed to preserve farms and changes in laws regulating subdivision of land and other development matters.
